Miller $1000 Natural Process Beer

The Miller $1000 Natural Process Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable chapter in Milwaukee brewing heritage, bridging the history of the A. Gettelman Brewing Company with that of the Miller Brewing Company.

Brand Origin and the Thousand-Dollar Challenge

The "$1000" moniker originates with the A. Gettelman Brewing Company, one of Milwaukee's historic breweries. In the late 19th century, Gettelman launched its famous "$1,000 Beer" challenge, offering a $1,000 cash reward to any chemist or individual who could prove the brew contained any adulterants or ingredients beyond pure malt, hops, cereal, yeast, and water. When Miller Brewing Company acquired Gettelman in 1961, it maintained and produced several Gettelman brands, continuing the heritage of the $1,000 Natural Process label under the Miller corporate umbrella.

Graphic Design and Label Text

The face of the can is dominated by the prominent "$1000" emblem and bold "Natural Process Beer" typography. Accompanying marketing text on the side panels touted the product with mottos such as "That's One in a Thousand" alongside descriptions highlighting selected hops, grains, and leisurely aging.

Collector Variations and Legacy

For breweriana enthusiasts, this can marks the transitional era following Miller's buyout of Gettelman. Variations exist across production runs, including textual shifts in the mandatory statement—some attributing production to the Gettelman Division of Miller Brewing Company and others listing Miller Brewing Company directly in Milwaukee, Wisconsin—as well as minor differences in seam construction and metallic trim. It stands as an important artifact representing mid-century brewery consolidation in Wisconsin.
