Miller High Life Beer Flat Top Can

History of Miller High Life Flat Tops

Produced by the Miller Brewing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Miller High Life flat top can represents one of the most recognizable graphic packaging designs in mid-century American brewing history. First introduced in 1903 as Miller's flagship brand with the long-running moniker "The Champagne of Bottle Beer," High Life became a cornerstone of Milwaukee's brewing dominance. When Miller transitioned High Life into canning lines, it adapted its elegant bottled presentation into flat top steel packaging.

A centerpiece of the can's graphic legacy is the iconic "Girl in the Moon" illustration. First trademarked in the early 1900s, the mysterious circus-attired figure seated upon a crescent moon served as a focal element on early can designs before later packaging redesigns shifted her placement to the reverse side or transitioned to bold metallic gold schemes.

Several variations of the High Life flat top were produced during its manufacturing run. These design iterations feature distinctions such as metallic versus enamel finishes, changes in the Miller script and soft-cross emblems, and varied mandatory tax markings or manufacturer stamps from major container suppliers like the American Can Company. Some issues also feature decorative vanity lids showcasing the Miller cross emblem. Together, these packaging evolutions make the Miller High Life flat top a classic study in the visual history of mid-century Milwaukee breweriana.
