Miller Malt Liquor 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Miller Malt Liquor 16 Oz Tab Top

The Miller Malt Liquor 16 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable chapter in the packaging history of the Miller Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Introduced after Philip Morris acquired the company, Miller Malt Liquor marked one of the brewery's earliest major brand diversions beyond its flagship High Life label.

Design and Aesthetics

The 16-ounce "tall boy" can features a bold, deep red background accented with crisp lettering and Miller's stylized script. A central feature of the label is the prominent gold eagle emblem perched atop the brand banner, a visual hallmark crafted to compete directly with rival malt liquor brands on the market. The expanded 16-ounce surface area provided ample space for the striking red-and-gold color scheme to stand out on store shelves.

Production and Breweriana Variations

Manufactured in an all-aluminum format, these pint-sized cans catered to the growing market for larger single-serving containers. Breweriana collectors recognize variations across different production runs. These differences are generally found in the mandatory legal text placement, seam markings, and brewery location statements—some examples list Milwaukee alone, while others list additional Miller facilities such as Fort Worth, Texas, and Azusa, California.

Because the original Miller Malt Liquor label had a relatively brief run before subsequent brand transitions, the 16-ounce tab top remains a sought-after piece for malt liquor and oversized breweriana collections.
