Monterey Beer Cone Top Can

Monterey Beer Salinas Cone Top

Manufactured by the Continental Can Company in the late 1930s, this low-profile cone top was issued by the Monterey Brewing Company of Salinas, California. The brewery originated in 1874 as the Salinas Brewery and underwent several reorganizations over the decades, operating as the Salinas Brewing & Ice Company before being renamed the Monterey Brewing Company in the late 1930s under brewery president Armin Neubert Jr.

The can's graphic layout highlights the distinct regional identity and local heritage of Monterey County:

• Salinas Valley Rodeo Heritage: Above the central frame, an illustrated Western scene depicts a cowboy riding a bucking horse alongside a corral fence and mountains, celebrating Salinas's identity as host of the renowned California Rodeo Salinas.
• Monterey Bay Coastline: Below the central panel, maritime imagery depicts sailboats, fishing craft, an offshore lighthouse, and the landmark Lone Cypress tree rooted atop a rocky coastal bluff.
• Central Cartouche: The brand lettering sits inside a decorative scrollwork marquee filled with solid black, anchored by the brewery's Salinas location and a mandatory "TAX PAID" statement along the bottom rim.

Among breweriana collectors, this can is known as the black marquee variation, standing alongside another version produced with a blue background inside the central scroll frame.
