Mug Ale Flat Top Can

Burkhardt Mug Ale Flat Top

The Mug Ale Flat Top Can is a classic piece of Midwest breweriana produced by the Burkhardt Brewing Company of Akron, Ohio. Burkhardt holds a prominent place in regional brewing history, with roots tracing back to the nineteenth-century Wolf Ledge Brewery and historical significance under the leadership of Margaretha Burkhardt, one of the earliest female brewery heads in the United States.

Mug Ale served as one of Burkhardt's primary packaged ale offerings during the post-Prohibition era. The label design is recognized by its graphic emblem featuring a foaming mug of ale, complemented by bold mid-century lettering tailored to capture consumer attention across Ohio and neighboring Great Lakes markets.

When the Cincinnati-based Burger Brewing Company purchased Burkhardt in the mid-1950s to expand northern Ohio production, Mug Ale possessed such strong regional brand loyalty that Burger kept the brand in production at the Akron facility even after retiring several other Burkhardt labels.

For breweriana collectors, the can is a treasured artifact of Akron's mid-century brewing heritage. Variations exist among surviving examples, reflecting differences in mandatory brewery text, manufacturing marks from container fabricators such as Continental Can Company, and Ohio state tax stamps stamped onto the lids.
