Narragansett Ale Flat Top Can

Cranston's Narragansett Ale Cans

The Narragansett Ale flat top can represents a classic piece of New England brewing heritage produced by the Narragansett Brewing Company in Cranston, Rhode Island. Established in 1890, Narragansett grew to become the premier brewing power in the region, known throughout the Northeast for its widespread advertising and famous slogan, "Hi Neighbor, Have a 'Gansett!"

Narragansett was an early adopter of canning technology, introducing canned offerings shortly after the repeal of Prohibition. Alongside its flagship lager, the Cranston brewery packaged ale varieties into flat top cans, including Banquet Ale and Pale Ale. The ale label design featured clean, bold typography and the distinguished Narragansett emblem, standing out with color schemes distinct from the brewery's lager packaging.

Over the course of its production run, multiple variations of the Narragansett Ale flat top were produced. These variations include subtle shifts in mandatory text, can company manufacturer marks, changes in the arrangement of the brewery's crest logo, and differences in mandatory tax statements such as the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) designation on earlier issues. Some issues also included instructional side panels.

Narragansett's prominence in the region was amplified by major advertising campaigns, including long-running sponsorships of Boston Red Sox broadcasts and promotional character illustrations created by Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss). As one of the foundational regional ale containers produced at the Cranston plant, this can remains an essential focal point for collectors of Rhode Island breweriana and historic American brewing memorabilia.
