Narragansett Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Rhode Island's Pop-Culture Classic

The Narragansett Lager Beer 12 oz tab top can stands as one of the most recognizable pieces of mid-century breweriana from New England. Hailing from the historic Narragansett Brewing Company in Cranston, Rhode Island, this can represents the golden era of a brand that dominated regional sales throughout the northeastern United States.

At its peak, Narragansett was the largest brewery in New England, operating an expansive production complex in Cranston. During this period, the brewery built deep community ties through sports sponsorships, famously partnering with the Boston Red Sox. Legendary broadcaster Curt Gowdy helped etch the brand into regional lore with the enduring catchphrase, "Hi Neighbor, Have a 'Gansett!"

Among collectors and cinema enthusiasts alike, this specific can holds legendary status due to its appearance in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster film Jaws. In one of the most memorable scenes in cinematic history, shark hunter Captain Quint (played by Robert Shaw) downs a can of Narragansett Lager and crushes it with one bare hand aboard the Orca to intimidate oceanographer Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss). This moment cemented the can's place in American pop culture and transformed it into a holy grail crossover collectible for both breweriana collectors and movie memorabilia enthusiasts.

Several variations of this can exist, reflecting slight modifications in brewery mandatory text, canning line markings, and finish coatings. Collectors frequently seek out these subtle design differences, which highlight the transition periods during the brewery's active manufacturing run in Cranston before operations at the original plant eventually ceased. Today, the can remains a quintessential centerpiece for any regional or pop-culture-focused breweriana display.
