Narragansett Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Narragansett Lager Flat Top

The Narragansett Lager Beer flat top can stands as an iconic centerpiece of New England breweriana, representing the flagship product of the Narragansett Brewing Company of Cranston, Rhode Island. At the height of its regional dominance, Narragansett operated the largest brewing facility in New England, distributing canned lager throughout the Northeast.

Design and Lithography

The can features Narragansett's classic brand identity, defined by bold script typography, rich crimson and metallic gold accents, and the familiar heraldic crest adorned with hop vines and barley. Cans from this era were manufactured using American Can Company's proprietary "Keglined" process. Over its production life, multiple graphic variations were issued from the Cranston plant, showcasing subtle alterations in rim trim, mandatory statutory markings, and side panel slogans.

Cultural and Collectible Significance

Narragansett's canned packaging achieved immense regional visibility through high-profile promotional partnerships. The brand became synonymous with its famous tagline, "Hi, Neighbor! Have a 'Gansett!", popularized across New England by legendary Boston Red Sox broadcaster Curt Gowdy. The brewery also commissioned celebrated author and illustrator Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) to design advertising campaigns and character art that complemented the brand's marketing.

Beyond sports broadcasting, the brand's packaging cemented its place in American pop culture when a can of Narragansett Lager was crushed by the character Captain Quint in the blockbuster film Jaws. For breweriana enthusiasts, the Cranston-labeled flat top remains one of the most recognizable and sought-after relics of East Coast brewing history.
