National Bohemian Bock 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Baltimore's Classic Bock Tab Top

The National Bohemian Bock 12 Oz Tab Top Can represents a seasonal release from the National Brewing Company of Baltimore, Maryland. While National Bohemian—affectionately known across the Chesapeake region as "Natty Boh"—was primarily recognized for its flagship pale lager, the brewery produced a seasonal bock offering timed for traditional late winter and spring distribution.

Design and Aesthetics

Unlike the familiar white, red, and gold lithography found on standard National Bohemian cans, the bock can features a distinctive dark aesthetic centered around traditional bock motifs. The can showcases a prominent goat illustration, a classic symbol of the bock style. Framed by rich black and gold tones, the graphics incorporate National Brewing's classic typography and heraldic elements, making it immediately distinguishable from the brewery's standard lineup.

Production and Variations

During its production era, the National Brewing Company operated its primary facility in Baltimore's Canton neighborhood while expanding its distribution footprint into other regional markets. Because bock beers were packaged on a limited seasonal schedule rather than distributed year-round, these cans were filled in considerably smaller quantities than the brewery's flagship lager cans.

Collectors recognize notable variations of this can across the production run. These variations generally reflect changes in mandatory brewery city listings as National expanded into secondary canning locations, as well as minor differences in seam construction, canning insignia, and mandatory side-panel text.

Collector Significance

For regional breweriana enthusiasts and Maryland collectors, the National Bohemian Bock tab top is an evocative artifact of Baltimore's mid-century brewing landscape. Connected to the legacy of the National Brewing Company—the historic creator of the "Land of Pleasant Living" slogan and the iconic Mr. Boh mascot—this seasonal tab top remains a favored piece of East Coast breweriana.
