National Bohemian Light Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Baltimore's Iconic Natty Boh Can

The National Bohemian Light Beer 12 oz tab top can represents one of the most culturally enduring mid-Atlantic breweriana items, produced by The National Brewing Company in Baltimore, Maryland. Colloquially known throughout the Chesapeake Bay region as "Natty Boh," the brand established deep roots in Maryland's local identity and sports heritage.

Mascot and Regional Heritage

The can showcases the unmistakable branding centered around Mr. Boh, the company's famous mascot. Recognizable by his prominent handlebar mustache and single winking eye, Mr. Boh became an enduring regional icon. The packaging frequently paid homage to the brand's celebrated slogan, "From the Land of Pleasant Living," a phrase celebrating the maritime culture and lifestyle around the Chesapeake Bay. During this era, National Brewing Company president Jerold Hoffberger also owned Major League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles, cementing Natty Boh cans as a fixture of Baltimore baseball lore and Memorial Stadium concessions.

Innovations and Can Production

The National Brewing Company built a widespread reputation for packaging and distribution advancements. Decades before the introduction of tab tops, the brewery made packaging history by introducing the six-pack can carrier to the beer industry. By the time this light beer tab top arrived on shelves, National had cemented its status as an East Coast industrial powerhouse, running extensive canning operations out of its landmark facility at O'Donnell and Conkling Streets in Baltimore's Canton neighborhood.

Collector Variations

For breweriana enthusiasts, this can features multiple variations across production runs. Differences exist in the placement of the Baltimore mandatory text, tab styles, seam constructions, and subtle changes in the phrasing surrounding the "Light Beer" designation. While the brewery expanded canning operations across several regional facilities, examples bearing the classic Baltimore, Maryland brewery imprint remain among the most sought-after by regional collectors.
