National Bohemian Light Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Baltimore's Natty Boh Legacy

The National Bohemian Light Beer 12 oz can represents one of the most culturally enduring brands in mid-Atlantic brewing history. Produced by the National Brewing Company of Baltimore, Maryland, the brand affectionately became known across the region as "Natty Boh".

At the center of the can's visual presentation is the iconic mascot, "Mr. Boh," a round-faced character featuring a prominent handlebar mustache and a single winking eye. Mr. Boh grew into an enduring civic emblem for Charm City. A popular piece of Baltimore folklore jokingly claims that Mr. Boh has only one eye because his local rival, Gunther Beer, claimed "Gunther's got it," leaving Boh looking for the rest.

The can is closely tied to Maryland sports and maritime culture through the famous marketing tagline, "From the Land of Pleasant Living". Under brewery president Jerold Hoffberger—who simultaneously owned the Baltimore Orioles—National Bohemian was served at Memorial Stadium, cementing its status as the quintessential beverage of the city's sports heyday. The brewery also celebrated its Chesapeake ties by commissioning a skipjack sailboat to tour local waterways and promote the label.

For collectors of vintage breweriana, cans carrying the Baltimore imprint are prized for their classic combination of crimson, gold, and white lithography. Known variations exist across production runs, featuring slight shifts in mandatory text, brewery address markings, and minor graphic alterations around the central mascot insignia. Following corporate mergers and the eventual shuttering of the original brewery on O'Donnell Street, cans bearing the original Baltimore manufacturing text serve as celebrated artifacts of Maryland's industrial past.
