National Bohemian Light Beer 16 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

National Bohemian 16 Oz Zip Top

The National Bohemian Light Beer 16-ounce zip/tab top can represents a classic piece of mid-Atlantic breweriana from The National Brewing Company of Baltimore, Maryland. Widely recognized by its regional nickname "Natty Boh," the brand holds a cherished position in Baltimore's commercial and sports history.

Design and Iconography

This tall pint can features the distinguished brand emblem anchored by the beloved mascot, "Mr. Boh". Instantly identifiable by his prominent handlebar mustache, jaunty wink, and lack of a second eye, Mr. Boh became one of the most recognizable corporate figures in American brewing. The 16-ounce format provided ample display space for the brewery's bold heraldic lettering, traditional script, and the familiar red, white, and gold color scheme that defined the brand's mid-century packaging.

Historical Context

Originating in Baltimore's Canton neighborhood, The National Brewing Company rose to become an industrial powerhouse in Maryland. The brewery gained substantial regional notoriety through extensive sports sponsorships—most notably its ties to Baltimore baseball—and strong associations with Chesapeake Bay culture. As company distribution grew, the brewing operation acquired facilities across other regions, which led to distinct canning runs reflected on label mandatories.

Collector Variations

Breweriana collectors track several variations of this 16-ounce release. Differences frequently appear in the mandatory facility text printed along the side panels, where versions list Baltimore alone or include additional packaging cities. Further variations exist in the underlying manufacturing finishes, with cataloged examples displaying both enamel and metallic paint treatments across production runs. These subtle distinctions make the pint can an enduring staple among Maryland breweriana specialists.
