National Bohemian Light Beer Flat Top Can

Natty Boh Detroit Flat Top Can

The National Bohemian Light Beer flat top can produced by National in Detroit, Michigan, represents a notable chapter in the mid-century expansion of one of America's most recognizable brewing labels. While "Natty Boh" originated as a Mid-Atlantic staple from The National Brewing Company in Baltimore, the company expanded its Midwestern footprint by acquiring the historic Altes Brewing Company facility in Detroit.

The can's front panel prominently features the famous brand mascot, Mr. Boh, distinguished by his iconic winking eye and handlebar mustache, framed by classic red, white, and metallic accents. Detroit-labeled examples are particularly sought after by breweriana collectors because the Detroit facility operated for a much shorter lifespan than the primary Baltimore headquarters, making cans bearing the Detroit plant mandatory lines significantly scarcer.

Variations exist among surviving examples, distinguished primarily by minor differences in mandatory side-panel wording, city listings, and manufacturer marks that reflect slight shifts across production runs. The Detroit flat top remains a celebrated piece linking Baltimore brewing culture with Detroit's industrial history.
