National Bohemian Light Beer Flat Top Can

Natty Boh Detroit Flat Top Can

The National Bohemian Light Beer flat top can produced by the National Brewing Company in Detroit, Michigan, represents a notable chapter in the mid-century regional expansion of one of America's most recognizable beer brands. While primarily famous as a Mid-Atlantic institution, National Brewing expanded into the Midwest by acquiring the former Altes Brewing Company production plant in Detroit.

Design and Collectibility

The can features the beloved brand mascot, "Mr. Boh"—the iconic one-eyed, mustachioed character—alongside classic red, white, and gold graphics. Detroit-market examples are particularly desirable among breweriana enthusiasts because the Detroit facility operated for a much shorter window than the main Baltimore headquarters, making Detroit-labeled cans considerably scarcer.

Variations and Heritage

Collectors track variations of this can, primarily distinguished by differences in mandatory side-panel text, corporate phrasing, and can manufacturer markings. These differences reflect slight alterations in production batches and regulatory requirements over the Detroit plant's operational lifespan. Today, the Detroit flat top remains a celebrated piece bridging Great Lakes industrial heritage and classic American advertising art.
