National Bohemian Pale Beer Flat Top Can

Mid-Century National Boh Pale Can

Produced by The National Brewing Company in Baltimore, Maryland, the National Bohemian Pale Beer flat top can holds an iconic place in Mid-Atlantic breweriana. Known affectionately throughout the Chesapeake Bay region as "Natty Boh," the brand became deeply rooted in regional culture through memorable advertising campaigns and classic slogans such as "Oh boy, what a beer!" and "From the Land of Pleasant Living."

The can's graphic design prominently features the brewery's legendary mascot, Mr. Boh. Characterized by his cheerful winking eye, round face, and broad handlebar mustache, the mascot serves as the visual centerpiece alongside traditional heraldic crest imagery and bold mid-century typography.

Beyond recognizable branding, The National Brewing Company played a notable role in mid-century packaging and marketing history. The Baltimore-based brewer was among the earliest industry innovators to adopt and market the modern cardboard six-pack can carrier, altering how canned beer was distributed to retail consumers. In addition, the brewery established strong sports marketing ties under brewery president Jerold Hoffberger, who owned the Baltimore Orioles and made National Bohemian a permanent fixture at Memorial Stadium during the franchise's golden era.

For breweriana enthusiasts, known variations exist across canning runs for this label. These variations feature subtle differences in manufacturer markings from can makers such as Continental Can Company, variations in mandatory state alcohol statement phrasing, and regional state tax stamps embossed or stamped on the lids, reflecting the brewery's Mid-Atlantic distribution footprint.
