The Story of New England Ale

Brewed by the Commonwealth Brewing Corporation in Springfield, Massachusetts, New England Ale stands as a notable regional label from the post-Prohibition era. Commonwealth began operations in the facility formerly occupied by the Springfield Brewing Company. While the brewery produced a wide portfolio of bottled and draught brands, New England Ale was one of only two core labels that the company ever packaged into cans.

Manufactured by the National Can Company, the container features the manufacturer's early double-lined construction along with the mandatory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement on the side panels. The label graphics display bold period typography and promotional phrases such as "Result: A True New England Ale" alongside storage and chilling recommendations.

Because Commonwealth operated during the economic headwinds of the Great Depression and faced metal restrictions leading into World War II, their canning output remained relatively modest compared to larger national shipping breweries. Multiple variations of the New England Ale can are documented, displaying distinct differences such as color shifts in the lettering trim and slight text adjustments in the regulatory and side-panel copy. Today, it remains an essential piece of Western Massachusetts brewing history.
