New England Ale Flat Top Can

New England Ale Flat Top Can

The New England Ale Flat Top Can was packaged for the Commonwealth Brewing Corporation of Springfield, Massachusetts. Operating from Chestnut Street following the Repeal of Prohibition, Commonwealth was established in a historic facility previously operated by the Springfield Brewing Company. To lead production, the brewery retained veteran master brewer Louis Kuhn, who had originally served as brewmaster for the facility prior to Prohibition.

Manufactured by the National Can Company, the container utilized the firm's early double-lined can construction. The exterior features classic side-panel opening instructions, mandatory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statements, and state licensing text, including Massachusetts permit notations. The front face showcases prominent brand typography framed by contrasting borders and traditional styling.

Commonwealth produced a variety of brands in draught and bottled formats, but New England Ale was one of only two flagship labels that the company ever packaged into cans. Label variations exist across production batches, distinguished by differences in lettering trim colors, state permit text, and side-panel phrasing such as "Result a True New England Ale". Because Commonwealth remained in business for only a limited timeframe, this can represents an important artifact of Massachusetts brewing history.
