Noch Eins Pale Beer Crowntainer

Washington's Noch Eins Crowntainer

Packaged by Washington Breweries, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio, this Crowntainer represents the brewery's flagship pre-war and early wartime offering. The brand name Noch Eins—translating from German to "another one" or "one more"—paid tribute to Old World brewing traditions and tavern culture.

The container's central oval medallion features a cheerful, mustachioed gentleman in a waistcoat holding aloft a foamy glass of beer marked with a "W." Flanked by a horizontal band of stars, the label displays the brand name in heavy Blackletter Gothic script set against a dark band, accompanied by "Pale BEER" and the brewery's Columbus manufacturing credits along the base.

Surviving examples of the Noch Eins Crowntainer incorporate the statutory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement alongside mandatory alcohol content declarations specifying a range between 3.2% and 7% by weight.

As World War II escalated, rising domestic anti-German sentiment prompted American regional brewers to pivot away from Germanic branding. Washington Breweries eventually phased out the Noch Eins moniker in favor of the overtly patriotic Washington's XX Pale Beer, which featured an American bald eagle and a red, white, and blue motif. Because of this mid-century brand transition and its evocative graphics, the Noch Eins Crowntainer stands out as an intriguing artifact of American brewing and packaging history.
