North Star XXX Beer 12 Oz Zip Top Can

North Star XXX Beer Zip Top Can

The North Star XXX Beer 12-ounce zip top can represents a notable chapter in Upper Midwest brewing heritage. Distributed under the historic Jacob Schmidt identity by the Associated Brewing Company, this can connects mid-century packaging evolution with one of Saint Paul, Minnesota's most venerable brewing traditions.

Brewery Heritage and Brand Origins

The "North Star" name carries historical weight in Minnesota brewing lore. In the late nineteenth century, brewmaster Jacob Schmidt purchased an interest in the original North Star Brewery in Saint Paul. Following a catastrophic fire at that facility, Schmidt went on to acquire the Cave Brewery site, establishing his iconic landmark brewery on West Seventh Street. After decades of independent operation, corporate realignments led to Schmidt's acquisition by Pfeiffer Brewing, which subsequently reorganized as the Associated Brewing Company. Associated preserved regional brand equity by canning under the "Associated DBA Jacob Schmidt" designation in Saint Paul.

Graphic Design and Label Elements

The can's design emphasizes regional pride, drawing its identity from Minnesota's state motto, L'Étoile du Nord ("The Star of the North"). The prominent "XXX" marking pays homage to historic brewing conventions traditionally used to designate extra strength or premium body. Stylized typography and prominent celestial star motifs dominate the face panels, framed by bold mid-century color blocking that makes the can a recognizable piece of Midwestern breweriana.

Collector Notes and Variations

Among breweriana enthusiasts, this can is an essential artifact of Associated Brewing Company's regional operation. The mandatory text on the side panels identifies Saint Paul as the brewing and canning location. Multiple variations exist across different manufacturing batches, primarily distinguished by minor differences in the layout of the mandatory brewery text, rim specifications, and side seam construction.
