North Starr XXX Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

North Starr XXX 16 Oz History

The North Starr XXX Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable chapter in Minnesota brewing heritage, tied directly to the operations of the Associated Brewing Company in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Brand Roots and Brewing Heritage

The North Star name carries deep roots in St. Paul brewing history, originating in the city's early brewing era before becoming associated with the historic Jacob Schmidt facility. When Associated Brewing Company acquired and operated the landmark St. Paul plant on West Seventh Street, it continued producing several established regional labels, including the North Star brand. The "XXX" branding drew upon traditional brewing iconography historically used to designate extra body and hearty brewing character.

Graphics and Label Design

This 16-ounce tall-boy container features clean, mid-century industrial graphics. The can face prominently displays the stylized North Star name and the distinctive "XXX" emblem alongside crisp geometric borders. The pint-sized 16-ounce volume offered a larger, value-oriented option compared to the traditional 12-ounce containers, designed to appeal to working-class markets and outdoor sporting crowds throughout the Upper Midwest.

Collector Notes and Variations

Among breweriana collectors focusing on Minnesota and Upper Midwest breweries, the can is appreciated for several reasons:

• Mandatory Text Variations: Because Associated Brewing Company operated regional facilities across multiple cities, mandatory text along the seam shows variations. Some examples strictly credit the St. Paul operation, while others list multiple Associated Brewing city locations.
• Construction Differences: Collectors catalog subtle differences across manufacturing runs, including variations in rim construction, lid stamping, and tab style designs.
• Format Appeal: While standard 12-ounce versions of the label saw wide distribution, the 16-ounce pint format provides an eye-catching display piece in regional brand runs.

The North Starr XXX 16-ounce can remains a classic artifact celebrating the post-merger era of St. Paul's commercial brewing industry.
