Northern Beer Flat Top Can

Northern Beer Flat Top

Produced for the Northern Brewing Company of Superior, Wisconsin, this flat top container represents one of the signature packaged offerings from the historic Twin Ports brewery. Founded in the late nineteenth century after Louis Rueping reorganized an earlier venture, Northern Brewing Company grew to become a major industrial presence at the head of Lake Superior. During its mid-twentieth-century operations, Northern enjoyed robust regional distribution, commanding strong loyalty across northern Wisconsin communities such as Superior, Spooner, and Rice Lake.

The label presentation reflects Northern's local heritage, featuring the memorable slogan "It's Superior," which played on both the brewery's home city and the standard of its product. Finished on a lacquered steel body bearing the American Can Company "Keglined" trademark oval, the design utilizes bold lettering alongside regional graphic elements.

Collectors of Upper Midwest breweriana prize examples from Northern Brewing Company as tangible artifacts of Wisconsin's independent brewing landscape. Variations of Northern flat top cans exist across different manufacturing runs, exhibiting subtle differences in side-panel text, coloring, and manufacturer markings.
