Oertel's 92 Beer Flat Top Can

Historic Louisville Flat Top

Produced by the Oertel Brewing Company in Louisville, Kentucky, the Oertel's '92 Beer flat top is a quintessential artifact of mid-century Bluegrass State brewing history. Headquartered along Story Avenue in Louisville's historic Butchertown neighborhood, Oertel stood as one of the city's legendary "Big Three" brewing institutions alongside Falls City and Frank Fehr.

The prominent "92" designation in the brand name pays tribute to 1892, the milestone year when John F. Oertel gained sole ownership of the brewery. The can's classic graphic design showcases bold typography, oval framing, and memorable company slogans such as "Cheerful Refreshment" and "A Full Measure of Pure Pleasure."

Manufactured across partnerships with major can makers like the Continental Can Company and the American Can Company, this label exhibits multiple variations known to collectors. These variations include differences in manufacturer plant codes, subtle adjustments to the graphic layout, metallic versus enameled paint details, and state-specific tax stamps stamped directly into the lids, notably the Kentucky tax lid.

Following the eventual shutdown of the original Butchertown brewery, the brand was briefly revived through contract brewing elsewhere, making original cans bearing the authentic Louisville canning line text prized cornerstones of Ohio River Valley breweriana collections.
