Oertel's '92 Lager Beer Crowntainer

The Oertel's '92 Crowntainer

The Oertel's '92 Lager Beer Crowntainer was manufactured for the Oertel Brewing Company of Louisville, Kentucky. Located in Louisville's historic Butchertown neighborhood, the brewery originally operated as the Butchertown Brewery before John Fred Oertel acquired sole ownership in 1892. In honor of that milestone, the brewery named its flagship line "Oertel's '92," turning the number into a hallmark of regional breweriana.

Manufactured by the Crown Cork & Seal Company, this container served as a major packaging format for Oertel's flagship lager. The visual layout highlights the prominent "'92" numeral inside the brewery's trademark shield emblem, accented by bold text declaring the contents as lager beer.

Collectors recognize several design variations across production runs. The design was distributed with metallic silver backgrounds as well as white and cream enamel finishes. During World War II, Oertel issued a "Victory" variant that integrated wartime elements onto the label. Furthermore, variations exist bearing the mandatory "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement alongside non-IRTP releases that followed the repeal of the federal marking requirement.

As a central artifact from one of Louisville's most prominent twentieth-century brewing operations, the Oertel's '92 Crowntainer remains a key piece of Kentucky brewing history.
