Old Bohemian Cream Ale Flat Top Can

Old Bohemian Cream Ale Flat Top Can

This 12-ounce flat top can features Old Bohemian Cream Ale, produced by Eastern Brewing Corporation of Hammonton, New Jersey. The design showcases a minimalist layout highlighted by sweeping cursive typography for "Cream" flanked by block lettering for "Old Bohemian" and "Ale," with the mandatory statement "Contents 12 Fl. Ozs." placed neatly along the upper rim and "Fully Aged" positioned at the base. At the lower left margin, the classic American Can Company "Keglined" oval logo marks its mid-century canning pedigree.

Old Bohemian served as one of Eastern Brewing's primary regional labels throughout much of the post-World War II period. Positioned as a budget-friendly alternative in Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic markets, Old Bohemian was marketed across multiple beer styles, including light lager, bock, and cream ale. Newspaper promotions commonly highlighted its value proposition, offering consumers full-flavored traditional ale at price points well below national premium brands. Over several decades, the brand evolved through numerous packaging updates, spanning early flat tops through pull tabs before disappearing when the facility ceased operations.

Eastern Brewing Corporation began operations in 1933 following the repeal of Prohibition, originally organized under the name Eastern Beverage Corporation before adopting the Eastern Brewing Corp. identity in the 1950s. Operating out of Hammonton in southern New Jersey, the brewery survived for decades by focusing heavily on contract brewing, regional value brands, supermarket house labels, and novelty products. Under longtime family management by the Penza family, the company remained a fixture of local manufacturing while many other regional competitors folded. Eastern Brewing finally halted brewing operations around 1990.

For breweriana collectors, mid-century flat top cans from Eastern Brewing represent a notable chapter in East Coast contract brewing and regional distribution. Cans from the Old Bohemian product lineup are particularly sought after by New Jersey beer history enthusiasts and cream ale style collectors.
