Old Crown Premium Quality Ale 12 Oz Zip Top Can

Old Crown Ale Zip Top Can

The Old Crown Premium Quality Ale 12 Oz Zip Top Can represents a notable chapter in northern Indiana's brewing heritage, originating from the historic Old Crown Brewing Corporation in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The facility, originally established along Spy Run by Charles L. Centlivre in the 19th century, produced some of the most recognized regional beer and ale labels in the Midwest.

Brewery Heritage

The brewery originally introduced the Old Crown label in the late 1930s, and the ale grew into one of the top-selling ales in the state of Indiana. Later operating formally under the Old Crown Brewing Corporation name during the 1960s, the company retained its heraldic crown iconography as the centerpiece of its brand identity across all canned offerings.

Design and Collector Notes

The can features the traditional Old Crown crest accompanied by bold "Premium Quality Ale" lettering. The composition showcases the clean mid-century aesthetic favored by the brewery, complete with American Can Company "Keglined" branding and standard regulatory labeling.

Breweriana collectors recognize variations of this can, which feature subtle differences in mandatory side panel text, tax and alcohol statements, and minor manufacturer markings. Serving as an artifact from the final independent decades of Fort Wayne's heritage brewing era prior to the facility's eventual closure in the 1970s, it remains a popular target for Midwest can collections.
