Old Dutch Premium Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Old Dutch Premium Lager Flat Top Can

This 12-ounce flat top can represents a classic post-Prohibition mid-century package from Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley brewing heritage. Centered within an oval yellow-and-gold medallion, the label prominently features the cheerful, mustachioed German gentleman raising a frothy glass stein of beer. The regional slogan, "Pennsylvania's Best," curves above the illustration, while the bold Old Dutch typography in red Germanic lettering commands the center, underscored by the mandatory statement confirming it was packaged at The Eagle Brewing Company in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania.

Old Dutch served as Eagle Brewing Company's flagship brand across several decades. Marketed as a traditional, wholesome lager brewed for hardworking regional drinkers, the brand was anchored by the smiling character on its label, which became an instantly recognizable mascot on bar signs, serving trays, and tap knobs across eastern Pennsylvania. Eagle offered a diverse lineup under the Old Dutch banner, including porter, bock, and half-and-half varieties, keeping the brand prominent in neighborhood taverns until the brewery ended operations in the 1960s.

The Eagle Brewery traces its roots back to 1867 in Catasauqua, founded as Schaefer & Kostenbader along Railroad and Mulberry streets. After halting legal brewing during the Prohibition era, the plant was revived shortly after Repeal under Walter K. Miller and was soon reorganized as the Eagle Brewing Company in 1934. For three decades, the independent brewery maintained a dedicated local following in Catasauqua and surrounding communities. However, the post-war consolidation of the brewing industry and aggressive distribution from national mega-breweries gradually squeezed smaller local producers, leading Eagle Brewing Company to close its doors permanently in 1964.

For collectors of vintage breweriana, cans from Eagle Brewing Company hold lasting appeal due to their rich Pennsylvania Dutch regional ties and bold graphic identity. Mid-century flat tops carrying character illustrations and local municipal brewing credits remain sought-after cornerstones of historic Pennsylvania can collections.
