Old German Brand Beer Cone Top Can

Old German Brand Cone Top Can

The Old German Brand Beer cone top can stands as one of the most celebrated packaging designs from the Queen City Brewing Company of Cumberland, Maryland. Operating out of its historic facility on Market Street along Wills Creek, Queen City utilized the Old German label as its premier flagship brand, securing widespread distribution across the Mid-Atlantic and Appalachian markets.

The container was manufactured in a high-profile format by the Continental Can Company. Visually, the label is distinguished by prominent gothic typography paired with classic heraldic crests and decorative regional breweriana motifs. Promotion for the brand was widespread and memorable, closely associated with the brewery's illustrated mascot, "Herman," as well as company-sponsored community organizations like the regional championship softball team, the "Old German Hermanettes."

For breweriana collectors, the can presents several notable variations across its manufacturing history. These variations include differences in mandatory legal statements—such as panels bearing the "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) declaration compared to subsequent non-IRTP releases—as well as minor changes in factory text and brewery slogans, such as the inclusion of "Aged That Extra Month." The Old German cone top remains an essential display piece representing Maryland's industrial brewing heritage.
