Old German Brand Premium Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Queen City's Old German Can

Queen City Brewing Company, based in Cumberland, Maryland, issued the Old German Brand Premium Lager Beer tab top can as one of its prominent regional packaged offerings. Originally founded in 1901 as the German Brewing Company, the brewery weathered multiple renamings across the twentieth century—adopting the Liberty Brewing Company moniker during World War I and the Queeno Company during Prohibition—before establishing itself as Queen City Brewing Company.

Old German served as the brewery's flagship label and was widely distributed throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and neighboring regions. The can design prominently showcases the traditional Old German typography along with the company's long-running slogan, "The World Knows No Finer Lager". The brand was also known for its local marketing campaigns featuring the folkloric mascot "Herman (the German)" and its sponsorship of the "Old German Hermanettes" regional athletic teams.

Within breweriana circles, the Queen City Old German tab top can is celebrated as a piece of Western Maryland brewing heritage. Collectors note several known variations across production runs, including subtle shifts in mandatory statement layouts, differing lid rim colors, and distinct can manufacturing marks. Following the closure of Queen City Brewing Company in 1974, rights to the Old German label were acquired by the Pittsburgh Brewing Company, ending decades of local can production at the Market Street facility in Cumberland.
