Old German Brand Premium Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Queen City's Old German Flat Top

The Old German Brand Premium Lager Beer flat top can stands as the flagship container from the Queen City Brewing Company of Cumberland, Maryland. Originally founded in 1901 as the German Brewing Company before adopting the Queen City name in 1941, the brewery grew to become an industrial staple of Western Maryland.

Old German served as the brewery's premier label, promoted widely throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Appalachian regions with the prominent marketing slogan, "The World Knows No Finer Lager." The brand gained widespread regional visibility through Queen City's sponsorship of the "Old German Hermanettes" (often called the "Oh Gee" gals), a competitive women's softball team whose uniforms featured the company's Bavarian cartoon mascot, Herman the German.

For breweriana enthusiasts, this flat top represents a celebrated chapter in Maryland brewing history. Queen City expanded its footprint in 1958 by acquiring its cross-town competitor, the Cumberland Brewing Company, operating until the Cumberland plant eventually closed in the 1970s.

Collectors recognize variations of this flat top across different production runs. These variations showcase differences in mandatory brewery text formatting, the presence of colored accent bands along the top and bottom rims, and distinct canning line manufacturer marks from suppliers such as the Continental Can Company.
