Old German Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Maier Old German Lager Tab Top

Produced by the historic Maier Brewing Company in Los Angeles, California, the Old German Lager Beer tab top can represents a notable entry in West Coast breweriana. Maier was one of Southern California's longest-running brewing institutions, operating out of its downtown facility on Commercial Street near the Santa Ana Freeway.

During an era marked by intense competition from national shipping breweries, Maier maintained its presence by manufacturing a broad roster of budget-friendly regional labels and private-label contracts. Old German was among these regionally distributed brands, using Old World branding to appeal to consumers seeking traditional heritage styling.

Graphic Design

The can's visual presentation centers on classic Germanic motifs. Its artwork features bold gothic typography, heraldic crests, and metallic trim accents. This visual approach was a hallmark of mid-century regional marketing, designed to project brewing craftsmanship directly on retail shelves.

Label Variations

For collectors of California breweriana and Maier packaging, the Old German label offers several points of interest. Variations exist across production runs, reflecting adjustments in metallic paint finishes, mandatory legal text layouts, and container manufacturer marks. These production differences reflect the evolving packaging contracts Maier maintained during its downtown Los Angeles operations.
