Old German (tornberg's) Beer Flat Top Can

Tornberg's Old German Flat Top

The Old German (Tornberg's) Beer flat top can is a notable piece of mid-century Northern California breweriana, packaged under the North Bay Brewing Company label in Santa Rosa, California. North Bay Brewing served as a recognized trade name for Grace Bros. Brewing Company, a cornerstone regional establishment in Sonoma County that produced and canned numerous regional brands.

Brand Heritage

The Tornberg brand name holds a storied place in California's brewing history. Traced to master brewer Carl A. Tornberg and continued through ventures connected to his family, the Tornberg recipes and branding were utilized by a handful of regional facilities. The can design incorporates traditional German-style typography and heraldic elements, prominently highlighting the "Tornberg's Original" banner across the face of the can.

Breweriana Significance

For collectors of West Coast breweriana, this can stands out as a fascinating example of contract and trade-name canning from Santa Rosa. Variations of this can exist, with differences distinguished by statutory tax text and minor label markings. Because North Bay Brewing's output was largely confined to local and regional distribution, surviving examples of this flat top can remain highly prized additions to collections centered around Northern California brewing heritage.
