Old Milwaukee America's Light Beer Flat Top Can

Old Milwaukee America's Light Beer

The Old Milwaukee America's Light Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in the history of the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Introduced by Schlitz to capture broad market appeal, the Old Milwaukee label served as a dependable, value-oriented complement to the brewery's flagship Schlitz brand.

Emblazoned with the slogan "America's Light Beer," the can showcases classic mid-century graphic design. Its face features traditional gothic-style script, clean heraldic accents, and balanced color blocking that made it instantly recognizable on retail shelves. The label prominently displays the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company name and its home city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

For breweriana collectors, this can is of interest due to known variations that exist from Schlitz's packaging runs. These differences include variations in mandatory text, subtle layout adjustments in the brewery address listings, and manufacturer maker marks from different can producers. As Jos. Schlitz expanded distribution throughout the mid-20th century, these packaging shifts documented the brewery's growing manufacturing footprint across the United States.
