Old Milwaukee Beer 10 Oz Tab Top Can

Memphis Old Milwaukee 10 Oz Can

The Old Milwaukee Beer 10 oz tab top can produced by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company in Memphis, Tennessee, represents a distinct chapter in American breweriana. While 12 oz containers served as the primary national standard, 10 oz cans provided an alternative size option distributed across select regional markets.

Brewery History in Memphis

The Memphis facility on East Raines Road was built as part of an aggressive modern expansion by Jos. Schlitz to serve growing demand across the American South. During its peak operation, the sprawling industrial plant ranked among the largest brewing operations in the region. Cans bearing the Memphis mandatory panel document this high-capacity manufacturing period prior to the industry consolidation that reshaped Schlitz in subsequent decades.

Can Graphic & Design Elements

The can features the recognizable Old Milwaukee livery, characterized by bold typography, classic heraldic crest elements, and a clean red, white, and blue color palette. The mandatory text panel explicitly identifies the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company plant in Memphis, distinguishing this release from sister packaging runs originating from other Schlitz facilities across the country.

Collector Notes and Variations

Within breweriana circles, 10-ounce cans are sought after by collectors seeking complete size runs alongside standard 12-ounce and 16-ounce packages. Known variations exist across different manufacturing batches from the Memphis facility, showcasing minor differences in mandatory text formatting, rim profiling, and factory seam construction. These variations make the can an engaging piece for collectors documenting Jos. Schlitz brewery branch locations and mid-century packaging evolutions.
