Old Milwaukee Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Longview Old Milwaukee Tab Top Can

The Old Milwaukee Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can produced under the authority of the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company represents a significant artifact from the company's major southern packaging operations in Longview, Texas. During the era of national brewing expansion, Schlitz established its massive East Texas facility to supply high-volume distribution networks across Texas and neighboring southern markets. Old Milwaukee served as Schlitz's primary value-oriented brand, positioned directly against major regional and national economy competitors.

Industrial and Regional Significance

The Longview facility was a major production powerhouse for Schlitz, eventually incorporating its own dedicated can-manufacturing plant to keep pace with canning demand. The packaging showcases the classic Old Milwaukee visual identity, utilizing bold brand typography, heraldic crest elements, and bright metallic finishes.

For breweriana collectors who catalog branch-plant releases, the defining element of this container is the mandatory statement printed near the seam line, formally attributing the packaging to Jos. Schlitz in Longview, Texas. While Schlitz canned Old Milwaukee across several nationwide hubs—including plants in Milwaukee, Tampa, and Memphis—the Longview text marks this container as an essential piece of East Texas industrial brewing history.

Known Packaging Variations

Throughout the production runs associated with the Longview plant, several graphic and structural variations are known to exist. Collectors identify differences such as subtle shifts in the alignment and phrasing of the brewery mandatory, modifications to regulatory statements, slight variations in the metallic lacquer shading, and differing plant listing arrangements on multi-city labels. Because these regional branch-plant releases were distributed primarily within their regional footprint, Longview-attributed Old Milwaukee cans remain key checklist items for Texas-focused collections and comprehensive brand mandatory sets.
