Old Milwaukee Pale Gold Beer Flat Top Can

Old Milwaukee Pale Gold Can

Produced for the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Old Milwaukee Pale Gold Beer flat top can represents a significant era in the brewery's mid-century expansion into the value-priced beer segment. Schlitz reintroduced Old Milwaukee to directly compete with regional and national budget lagers, deploying a polished, metallic presentation that belied its economical price point.

Label Art and Lithography

The can's graphic presentation is distinguished by its pale gold metallic background, accented with Old Milwaukee's traditional Gothic-style lettering and heraldic crest elements. Prominently labeled with "Pale Gold" and "Extra Dry" designations, the lithographed tin-plated steel design was created to project a premium visual standard.

Known Variations

Several variations of this can exist in the breweriana collecting community. Because Schlitz operated packaging lines across multiple regional hubs, collector variants show differences in mandatory city address listings and plant identification marks. Additional variations include minor text shifts in the brewer's statement, differing canning manufacturer marks from packaging suppliers such as the Continental Can Company and the American Can Company, and subtle differences in gold ink tone.

Historical Significance

This can played a major role in Schlitz's corporate history during the height of the Milwaukee brewing rivalries. Positioned as a secondary brand beneath the flagship Schlitz label, the Old Milwaukee can helped establish widespread national brand recognition that carried the nameplate through subsequent decades of brewery acquisitions and market transformations.
