Old Reading Beer Cone Top Can

Old Reading Beer Cone Top

The Old Reading Beer cone top can represents an iconic piece of Pennsylvania brewing heritage from the Old Reading Brewery in Reading, Pennsylvania. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the brewery resumed packaging its flagship brews, eventually introducing cone top cans as modern metal packaging gained traction across the United States.

Design and Manufacturing Features

Old Reading cans were manufactured across distinct structural formats, including the sought-after J-spout configuration by Crown Cork & Seal as well as low-profile styles produced by the Continental Can Company. The can's aesthetic features the traditional Old Reading script, often accented by the brewery's heraldic crest, bold branding, and Pennsylvania Dutch styling cues that resonated strongly throughout eastern Pennsylvania.

Variations and Collector Interest

Collectors recognize several graphic and physical variations of the Old Reading cone top. These differences include variations in mandatory tax-paid statements, shifts in background color tones and border trim, and differing manufacturer marks along the seam. The brewery also packaged larger quart-sized containers alongside the standard twelve-ounce format, broadening the spectrum of cans associated with the brand.

Because regional cone top releases from Pennsylvania hold a central place in East Coast breweriana history, the Old Reading cone top remains a quintessential centerpiece for enthusiasts focusing on mid-century American regional breweries.
