Warsaw's Old Tavern Lager Can

Historical Background

The Old Tavern brand originally originated prior to Prohibition under the Des Moines Brewing Company in Iowa. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the brand changed ownership and was eventually produced and canned by the Warsaw Brewing Corporation in Warsaw, Illinois. Established originally in the mid-19th century along the Mississippi River, Warsaw Brewing Corporation became a prominent regional producer in Hancock County, packaging regional staples such as Burgemeister and Old Tavern.

Can Design and Collector Notes

The 12-ounce Old Tavern Premium Lager Beer can showcases bold mid-century typography and traditional tavern-themed graphics. The label displays the brewery's mandatory location statement crediting Warsaw, Illinois.

Collectors track several graphic and textual variations of this can. Differences between production runs include variations in alcohol statement text, shifts in the placement of volume declarations, and subtle adjustments to the manufacturer and brewery imprint lines. As an artifact of post-Prohibition independent brewing in downstate Illinois, this can serves as an enduring representative of Warsaw Brewing Corporation's mid-century portfolio.
