Old Tavern Premium Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Warsaw's Fox Hunt Flat Top

Produced by the historic Warsaw Brewing Corporation in Warsaw, Illinois, the Old Tavern Premium Lager Beer flat top can is a prominent example of mid-century Midwestern pictorial breweriana. Although the Old Tavern name originally dated back to pre-Prohibition Iowa, the Warsaw Brewing Corporation became widely recognized among collectors for bottling and canning the brand during the post-Prohibition era along the Mississippi River.

The can is celebrated among can collectors for its detailed pictorial lithography. The centerpiece of the design features a vintage scene portraying fox hunters in traditional red coats on horseback pausing outside a rustic countryside inn. Set against a clean background, the illustrative art is framed by bold, classic typography displaying the Old Tavern insignia and the lager designation.

Manufactured with the American Can Company "Keglined" oval logo, this 12-ounce can was distributed throughout the regional Midwest market. Over the course of the brand's production at the Warsaw facility, several can variations were manufactured, featuring minor differences in legal mandatory wording, alcohol statement phrasing, and manufacturer markings. Because the Warsaw brewery closed its operations in the early 1970s, authentic cans bearing the Warsaw, Illinois canning line remain desirable centerpieces for regional collection displays.
