Old Topper Beer Crowntainer

Old Topper Beer Crowntainer

The Old Topper Beer Crowntainer stands as one of the prominent artifacts from the Rochester Brewing Company of Rochester, New York. Following the repeal of Prohibition, Rochester Brewing Company reopened on Emerson Street and established the Old Topper label as its flagship brand. While the brewery gained substantial notoriety for its ale, it also packaged its standard lager beer under the recognizable Old Topper moniker.

Manufactured by the Crown Cork & Seal Company, the can features the classic Old Topper typography and bold graphics emblematic of mid-century Upstate New York brewing. Regional brewers relied heavily on eye-catching shelf presence to hold their market territory against aggressive national expansion during this era.

From a collector's standpoint, this can offers insight into mid-20th-century regulatory and manufacturing shifts. Multiple variations of the Old Topper Crowntainer exist, reflecting changes in mandatory statutory text—such as the presence of the "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement—as well as minor alterations in graphic layout and color shades across production runs.

Rochester Brewing Company eventually merged with the Standard Brewing Company in the mid-1950s to form the Standard-Rochester Brewing Company, which maintained operations until 1970. Today, the Old Topper Beer Crowntainer serves as a key historical piece representing the competitive mid-century regional brewing industry in New York.
