Olde English Brand 800 Stout Malt Liquor 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Blitz-Weinhard Olde English 800

The Olde English Brand 800 Stout Malt Liquor 12 oz can represents an important chapter in the evolution of American malt liquor branding. Produced by the historic Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Company in Portland, Oregon, this can features the crown emblem and traditional gothic typography that came to define the brand for decades.

Brand Heritage & Design

The lineage of the label traces back to Duluth, Minnesota, where Peoples Brewing Company produced Ruff's Olde English Stout. The brand later transitioned through Bohemian Breweries in Spokane as Olde English 600 before being acquired by Blitz-Weinhard, where it became Olde English 800. During this era of brewing, the term "Stout" was used on the label to denote strength and body rather than a dark stout ale style, distinguishing high-potency malt liquors.

Under Blitz-Weinhard's stewardship, the brand developed significant momentum across the Pacific Northwest and western markets, eventually growing into the brewery's most prominent offering prior to the company's sale to Pabst Brewing Company in 1979.

Collector Notes & Variations

For breweriana collectors, this Blitz-Weinhard release is a classic Pacific Northwest artifact:

• Graphics and Branding: The front displays the signature crown emblem above the arched "Olde English 800" font and the prominent "Stout Malt Liquor" designation.
• Variations: Several variations of this label exist among collectors, featuring differences in canning manufacturer marks, mandatory line placement, and state-mandated alcohol statement stamps on the top lid.
• Brewery Lineage: Cans carrying the Portland, Oregon mandatory line preserve a key period of regional brewing before the brand expanded into a nationwide staple.
