Olympia Light Beer Test Can

Olympia Light Test Can Overview

Originating from the Olympia Brewing Company in Olympia, Washington, the Olympia Light Beer Test Can represents a developmental stage in the brewery's packaging history. As consumer interest in reduced-calorie offerings grew across the American brewing industry, established regional breweries experimented with new branding, color schemes, and can graphics before committing to full-scale commercial distribution.

Developmental Background

Before launching a permanent light beer line, Olympia collaborated with packaging manufacturers to produce trial runs. These test cans allowed brewery executives and marketing teams to evaluate shelf presence, graphic legibility, and the integration of their classic horseshoe trademark alongside the famous "It's the Water" motto.

Test cans were produced in restricted quantities intended for internal review, distributor presentations, or limited regional market trials rather than broad retail release. Can manufacturers created various test variations, exploring adjustments in typography, mandatory text placement, and background color accents to refine the brand's visual identity.

Collector Significance

Within the breweriana collecting community, the Olympia Light Beer Test Can serves as a tangible record of the brewery's evolution during the rise of the light beer category. Because test containers were never distributed on a mass commercial scale, they remain sought-after pieces of Pacific Northwest brewing history.
