Ortlieb's Philadelphia's Famous Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Ortlieb's Philadelphia Can

Ortlieb's Philadelphia's Famous Beer stands as a celebrated emblem of Philadelphia's storied brewing legacy. Produced by the Henry F. Ortlieb Brewing Company in the historic Northern Liberties neighborhood along North American and Third Streets, this straight steel can represents an era when regional independent breweries commanded immense local loyalty across Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic.

The Ortlieb brewing dynasty originated with German immigrant Trupert Ortlieb before being formally established under his son, Henry F. Ortlieb. For generations, the brewery stood toe-to-toe against expanding national macro-breweries, proudly marketing itself as Philadelphia's hometown favorite. In subsequent years, brewery president Joseph Ortlieb became an iconic local figure through memorable media campaigns promoting "Joe's Beer," solidifying Ortlieb's reputation as a fiercely independent underdog.

The graphics on this can prominently feature the traditional Ortlieb's heraldic crest alongside bold lettering declaring it "Philadelphia's Famous Beer". The design includes mandatory brewery text crediting Henry F. Ortlieb in Philadelphia, PA, and classic promotional phrasing highlighting the brewery's time-honored standards.

Among breweriana collectors, variations of this can exist, featuring minor differences in mandatory phrasing, typography details, and can manufacturer markings from fabricators like Crown Cork & Seal. Independent operations at the historic Philadelphia brewhouse ended when the Christian Schmidt Brewing Company acquired the label, cementing these original Henry F. Ortlieb cans as significant pieces of Pennsylvania breweriana history.
