Ortlieb's Premium Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Ortlieb's Flat Top History

The Ortlieb's Premium Lager Beer Flat Top Can was produced by the Henry F. Ortlieb Brewing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Located in the historic Northern Liberties neighborhood, the Ortlieb brewery was a cornerstone of the city's vibrant brewing heritage.

Design and Production Characteristics

The can features the traditional Ortlieb's brand imagery, characterized by bold script lettering, heraldic crest elements, and classic mid-century graphic styling. Cans for this line were primarily manufactured by major container producers, such as the Continental Can Company, bearing standard manufacturer stamps along the seam.

Known Variations

Collectors recognize several variations of the Ortlieb's Premium Lager flat top can. These differences occur in side-panel legal and mandatory text, brewery address markings, and container manufacturer marks. In addition to standard commercial beverage releases, promotional versions featuring slotted bank lids were produced for use as coin banks.

Historical Significance

Henry F. Ortlieb Brewing Company operated as one of Philadelphia's major independent regional breweries. This can stands as a representative example of regional canning during a period of fierce competition between local breweries and expanding national operations.
