Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Iconic Pabst Blue Ribbon Tab Top

Produced by the Pabst Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this 12-ounce tab top can represents a classic chapter in American breweriana design. Pabst Blue Ribbon—a brand whose heritage traces back to the Empire Brewery founded in 1844—cemented its place in American popular culture with its unmistakable visual identity.

Design and Visual Elements

The can features the classic Pabst Blue Ribbon emblem: a diagonal blue ribbon emblazoned across the face behind a bold red-and-white circular insignia. Flanked by stylized hop vines and barley sheaves, the graphics proudly display the long-standing claim of being "Selected as America's Best in 1893," recalling the brewery's historic recognition at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The clean typography and balanced color palette of red, white, and blue became an enduring hallmark of mid-century package design.

Production and Known Variations

During the era of tab top production, Pabst expanded distribution across the United States. Because Pabst packaged its flagship beer across regional facilities, collectors frequently encounter variations in the mandatory brewery city listings printed along the side seam. Depending on the packaging run, city listings might reference Milwaukee alone or include additional brewery locations such as Peoria Heights, Illinois; Newark, New Jersey; Los Angeles, California; or Pabst, Georgia.

Beyond mandatory text differences, variations also exist across base coatings and can construction methods. Examples range from metallic silver finishes to painted white backgrounds, alongside differing bottom profile designs and subtle variations in can manufacturer markings.

Collector Significance

As one of the most widely recognized brands in brewing history, Pabst Blue Ribbon tab top cans are a foundational staple for breweriana enthusiasts. They capture a pivotal period in beverage packaging history when major breweries expanded nationwide production.
