Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Pabst Newark 16 Oz Tab Top

The Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can bearing the Newark, New Jersey brewery mandatory represents an important artifact of mid-century East Coast brewing history. Pabst established its presence in the region after acquiring the former Hoffman Beverage Company facility in Newark during the mid-1940s, converting the complex into a primary packaging and distribution center to supply markets throughout the Northeast.

Design and Collector Details

This 16-ounce container features the classic Pabst Blue Ribbon graphic layout, headlined by the bold diagonal blue ribbon stripe running across an off-white field, accented with the traditional red banner and trademark crest. Scaled to the 16-ounce "Half Quart" or "One Pint" tall-can format, the package was designed to capture extra volume sales and serve as a prominent shelf display piece.

Collector interest in this can centers heavily around the mandatory text panel indicating production at the Newark plant. Pabst frequently altered its packaging text across production runs, leading to several cataloged variations among collectors. Known variations include releases that list Newark as the sole production site versus multi-plant city rosters that also name Milwaukee, Peoria Heights, or Los Angeles. Additional variations differ by side-seam fabrication methods, top-lid stamping text, and the placement or phrasing of fluid measurement declarations.

Industrial Significance

The Newark facility remained an integral component of Pabst's national network until the plant ceased operations in the mid-1980s. Cans produced at the Newark location provide breweriana enthusiasts with tangible documentation of New Jersey's rich post-war packaging history and the nationwide distribution strategies employed by the country's largest industrial brewing operations.
