Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer Flat Top Can

Newark Pabst Blue Ribbon Can

The Pabst Blue Ribbon Flat Top can featuring the Newark, New Jersey mandatory holds a prominent place in mid-century breweriana history. Following World War II, Pabst Brewing Company expanded its manufacturing footprint beyond the Midwest by acquiring the former Hoffman Beverage Company facility on South Orange Avenue in Newark. This East Coast production hub became famous for its landmark water tank shaped like a giant beer bottle, cementing Newark's status as a cornerstone of Pabst's regional distribution.

Manufactured primarily through the American Can Company using their proprietary "Keglined" process, these steel cans showcase the classic metallic silver, royal blue, and vibrant red ribbon insignia that came to define Pabst's national identity. A primary draw for collectors is the side-panel mandatory text crediting the Newark brewing facility. Depending on the specific production run, the can may also display American Can Company's trademarked "Tapacan" designation along the seam.

Several graphic variations exist among the Newark-sourced cans, making them an engaging focus for specialized collections. Differences across production runs include slight shifts in the layout of the brewery text, variations in the Keglined oval placement, and the presence or absence of mandatory state alcohol content statements. These cans serve as a direct artifact of Pabst's major mid-century coastal expansion and its efforts to supply the bustling Atlantic seaboard market.
