Pabst Blue Ribbon Bock 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Pabst Newark Bock Tab Top History

The Pabst Blue Ribbon Bock 12 oz zip top can produced out of Newark, New Jersey, represents a notable chapter in East Coast brewing history. Following Pabst's acquisition of the Hoffman Beverage facility in Newark to supply the dense northeastern market, the plant packaged both standard flagships and specialty releases.

Seasonal Packaging and Distribution

Unlike the standard flagship lager produced year-round in massive quantities, Pabst Bock was a seasonal product traditionally brewed and packaged for late winter and spring distribution. Because seasonal runs were distributed in significantly smaller quantities than core portfolio brands, examples preserved in collections are considerably less common.

Labeling and Regional Identification

The can's graphics adapt the classic Pabst Blue Ribbon crest and diagonal band motif with dark, rich seasonal color framing and prominent bock lettering. Mandatory labeling across the can clearly identifies the Newark, New Jersey facility alongside other regional Pabst production centers. Some production runs feature the era's promotional banner text proclaiming "No Opener Needed" along the upper lid rim.

Production Variations

Collectors recognize several variations of the Newark-labeled bock can. These differences arise from different can manufacturing suppliers—such as Continental Can Company and American Can Company—which resulted in subtle variations in manufacturer can codes, typography placement, and mandatory text layout. Sourcing the Newark-specific issue remains a priority for enthusiasts specializing in East Coast breweriana and brewery location sets.
