Pabst Blue Ribbon Bock Flat Top Can

Pabst Blue Ribbon Bock Cans

Produced by the Pabst Brewing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Pabst Blue Ribbon Bock flat top can represents one of the most celebrated seasonal releases in American breweriana. Pabst was among the early pioneers to package beer in cans, and its specialty seasonal offerings expanded the scope of canned breweriana.

Because bock beer was brewed as a limited specialty traditionally released in the springtime, production runs were considerably smaller than those for flagship lagers. This seasonal cycle naturally limited the volume of cans that entered market circulation, giving the can an enduring prominence among collectors.

The graphic layout brings together traditional brewing iconography and classic American brand design. Bock beers have long been associated with goat imagery—a historic nod to the style's Bavarian roots—and Pabst incorporated a stylized goat motif alongside its signature blue ribbon insignia. The bold metallic finish and color scheme set the bock can apart from Pabst's standard year-round line.

Collectors recognize several variations of this can. Differences appear in brewery location mandatories, reflecting distribution and canning across facilities such as Milwaukee and Peoria Heights. Other variations are identified by changes in mandatory legal statements—such as Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) designations—and the presence or styling of instructional text panels. Manufacturer stamps, including the American Can Company "Keglined" insignia, also vary across different production batches.
