Pabst Special Dark Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Pabst Special Dark Tab Top

Produced by the Pabst Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Pabst Special Dark 12 oz tab top can stands out as a notable aesthetic deviation from the brewer's standard blue, red, and white color palette. Designed for the company's dark lager offering, the packaging embraced a rich, deep brown and metallic gold livery, accented by the traditional Pabst heraldic crest, ribbon insignia, and barley motifs.

During the tab top era, major national brewing operations expanded their portfolios to cater to shifting consumer preferences, offering dark beers and specialty brews alongside flagship adjunct lagers. Pabst marketed Special Dark as a premium complement to its flagship Pabst Blue Ribbon. The can graphics mirrored this elevated positioning through ornate typography and reflective metallic finishes.

Collectors recognize variations of this can across different production runs. Depending on manufacturing origin and timeline, examples exist in both steel and all-aluminum constructions. Furthermore, mandatory brewery location statements along the seam reflect Pabst's national network of facilities, listing the primary Milwaukee headquarters alongside other regional shipping and brewing hubs.

Because dark beer historically accounted for a much smaller share of overall production compared to standard lagers, Special Dark cans were distributed in significantly lower quantities than standard Pabst Blue Ribbon cans. This lower original output makes the can a sought-after piece of breweriana for tab top collectors and Pabst brand specialists.
