Paul Bunyan Beer Flat Top Can

Paul Bunyan Beer Can Overview

Paul Bunyan Beer is one of the most recognizable graphic cans from Wisconsin brewing history. Associated with the Paul Bunyan Division of the Wisconsin Brewing Company—tied to the Fox Head Brewing Company in Waukesha, Wisconsin—this can celebrates the towering folklore lumberjack alongside the outdoor heritage of the upper Midwest.

Graphic Design and Imagery

The front panel displays an illustration of the mythical lumberjack Paul Bunyan, complete with his signature flannel shirt, suspenders, and woodsman's axe. The label incorporates bold typography alongside pine forest motifs, directly connecting to the Northwoods logging lore that resonated with regional consumers. A notable secondary tagline appearing on certain versions proclaims "Wisconsin, The Great Northwoods State," highlighting the regional pride behind the brand.

Known Variations

Collectors recognize multiple variations of the Paul Bunyan flat top. These variations typically differ in the color of the border trim (such as green trim versions), background shades ranging from bright white to off-white tones, and specific mandatory text printed along the side panels. Additionally, examples are known to carry can manufacturer stamps from different container makers, including Continental Can Company and National Can Company.

Collector Significance

Representing an era of character-driven regional breweriana, Paul Bunyan Beer remains a standout piece for Northwoods-themed and Wisconsin can collections. Its vibrant character graphics and rich American folklore ties make it a perennial favorite among breweriana hobbyists.
